Specialist Diagnostic Assessment

We offer full diagnostic assessments for dyslexia for children, FE, HE and adults.

Should I get a dyslexia assessment?

A dyslexia assessment serves a crucial purpose, primarily aimed at providing support and resources for the student, their parents or caregivers, and the school. It aims to provide an understanding of the reasons behind a student's academic struggles, identify effective strategies, and enable collaboration between schools, parents, and students to address their specific needs.

Where does the assessment take place?

The Dyslexia Tutor offers dyslexia assessments online and face-to-face.   Assessments can take place in the morning, afternoon or evening but are usually during a weekday morning to avoid tiredness impacting the results. The specific location may vary depending on the individual student's circumstances, and if necessary, the assessment can span multiple sessions. Online assessments are available nationwide.

How long do dyslexia assessments take?

Before the assessment takes place, I will collect background information.

This information includes details such as early development, family history, educational history, evidence of previous interventions and their impact. This information is gathered through discussions and questionnaires with parents, school staff, and the student.

What does the dyslexia assessment entail?

The assessment includes tests which identify underlying abilities, memory skills, phonological skills, processing speed, as well as literacy and numeracy proficiency (if applicable). The assessment is tailored to the individual student's needs, guided by the background information collected. To ensure the student's comfort and engagement, I utilise information provided by parents and the school, such as visual timetables, reward systems linked to their favourite characters, and breaks for rest, fidgeting, or movement. If necessary, the assessment can span multiple sessions.

How long does it take to receive the results?

Following the assessment, a comprehensive report containing detailed findings and recommendations is typically sent within four weeks. Additionally, a follow-up meeting is offered, ideally involving the school, to discuss and further understand the results.
